The Simply Soulful Approach is a little wacky, but it’s still yoga…

 Meet Donna from Simply Soulful Yoga…

When did you interest in yoga begin?

My interest in yoga and holistic therapies dates back to pre-2004; the 30th year of my life became one of great significance when, not only did I embark on a journey of self-discovery but I also decided to change career, life style and relocate to Devon as a result of this journey.

Tell us more about your vision for yoga within the Devon community…

A few of my yoga classes may seem a little wacky or unconventional to some, especially to yoga purists. I like to think of them as progressive and innovative; a fun way of blending the old with the new. My vision is to make yogic practice fun and accessible to all, reaching out to those who may otherwise think it too difficult, too traditional or too spiritual to attend yoga classes. Unconventional sounds intriguing to me. What kind of classes do you offer?

From yoga on a stand-up paddle board and yoga with cream tea or mocktails, to yoga with kid goats and tea cup pigs. From beach yoga to bootcamp yoga; even glow-in-the-dark ‘rave’ yoga. Wacky and out of the box? Yes, they are. That’s the idea – to introduce something new, fun and different.

What is important to emphasise, however, is this. Despite my unconventional, seemingly light-hearted yogic approach, the true philosophy and traditions of yoga practice are interwoven throughout ALL of my classes and form an integral part of my life.

Who do you teach and what is the main message throughout your classes?

I instil in my students the importance of working only within their own personal limitations and differentiate asanas within each class for all levels of experience. All my classes emphasise the importance of marrying the breath with mindful movement as an essential part of our practice. I incorporate the Sanskrit names and benefits of postures within my teachings and always invite integrity, love and joy into our practice.

Both my ‘traditional’ and my ‘wacky’ yoga classes focus on enhancing posture, balance, concentration and confidence. They relax, stretch and expand the body, mind and soul in different ways; inviting joy, laughter compassion and connection within ourselves, with each other, with the animal kingdom and the natural world around us.

My style may not be purist – but my intention is.

What are your top three conventional facts to support to quote you  “your unconventional yogic approach.”

  1. Relaxation reduces stress … by lowering cortisol levels.
  2. Laughter reduces pain…by increasing endorphin levels.
  3. Cultivating a deeper connection with people, animals and nature makes us feel happier by increasing oxytocin and dopamine levels.
